Wearable artwork and oddities including doughnut soap, bacon flasks and cheeseburger phones are some of the unique items that will be available at the El Paso Punk Rock Flea Market.
The Market, which takes place the first Sunday of every month in the parking lot of Dominic’s Italian Kitchen, is the brainchild of organizer Leah Valdez, who came across local artists, vintage enthusiasts and lovers of the bizarre at other flea markets and events around town.
“I frequent a lot of farmers markets, flea markets and art markets, and there’s always vendors that stand out to me,” Valdez said. “[They] have stuff you don’t see too often. I would always see this stuff and just be drooling over it, so I started approaching them and asking them to be a part of this.”
Vendors include Salem & St. Cyr, who will be displaying Dia De Los Muertos inspired art and offering $5 tarot readings, as well as Jake Valentine, who will be displaying art and jewelry from his signature line “Dead ‘N’ Glam.” Comics, buttons and art by Nacho Nova of youguysaremyfriends.com will also be available.
Live punk acts bands including Fixed Idea, Ballad 42 and Alien Time Machine take the stage at 1:00 p.m.
Valdez says she would like to see the market grow to be as big as the Trenton Punk Rock Flea Market in New Jersey and hopefully make their way to a larger space downtown. “The Trenton Flea Market has 400 plus vendors all selling vintage, punk and goth stuff,” she said. “We’re starting on a smaller scale, but we can move up there. We’re really interested in moving to the Glasbox because their space is so conducive to this.”
