Aguirre Springs Located about 45 minutes from El Paso, just over the Organ Mountains near Las Cruces, New Mexico, this park features streams that run year-round and shade trees located along hiking trails. Camping and picnic sites are available. For reservations and directions (575) 525-4300.

Burn Lake This public small lake in east Las Cruces off Interstate 10 is stocked with trout twice a month during the winter. It also

The Bowen Ranch The Bowen Ranch is at the edge of El Paso and sits in a time capsule of days gone by. Hereford cattle graze along the mountain slopes while buffalo roam the flatlands. Cathedral The Cathedral was also dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, patron of the cities. Begun in 1941-45, it was rebuilt between 1975 and 1977 after it was destroyed by fire. Avenida 16 de Septiembre, in front of the Plaza de Armas, Cd. Juárez.

Concordia Cemetery This graveyard as started in 1856 and by the 1880s had become the main burial site for El Paso. A section of Concordia was El Paso’s ‘Boot Hill’ and is where the infamous gunfighter John Wesley Hardin is buried. Northwest of the intersection of I-10 and Hwy. 54. Exit Copia St. from I-10 E.

Hueco Tanks State Park This area got its name from the huge basin-shaped rocks that catch and hold our less-than-abundant rainfall. Drawings on cave walls date back as far as 1,500 B.C. The El Paso County Historical Society's Burges House This is the famous home of Richard F. Burges. The Burges House also serves as a historical research center. The Classical Revival style house features four large columns in the front supporting the roof. Burges was city attorney in 1908 and wrote the city charter. He became a member of the Texas House of Representative in 1913.
He was instrumental in the development of Carlsbad Caverns and the building of the Elephant Butte Dam. The home is now the headquarters for the El Paso County Historical Society. 603 W. Yandell, for more info 533-3606.

Mission Socorro This mission is the best surviving local example of the Spanish Colonial/Mexican period. The Socorro Mission is distinguished by the fact that it is one of the oldest operating parishes in the United States. The Mission Trail Located 15 minutes east of downtown El Paso, the Mission Trail is rich in history dating back 400 years. Unique local shopping and dining are also nearby. Mission Ysleta The site of this mission was first used as a refugee camp in 1675 for Pueblo Indians who were escaping Apache raiders. The Spanish settled Tigua Indian refugees of the Pueblo Revolt at Ysleta in 1680. The original church is believed to have been built of mud chinked logs and willow reeds and was named Corpus Christi de la Isleta del Sur. Tigua labor built a per

Mt. Cristo Rey A 29-foot statue of Christ by internationally acclaimed Spanish sculptor Urbici Soler, stands atop an 800-foot
peak. Because of Mt. Cristo Rey’s proximity to Mexico the area is patrolled by Sunland Park, N.M., police on Wed. and Fri. from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. and by the Cristo Rey Preservation Society on Sat. and Sun., for more info call the Sunland Park police station (575) 589-6600.

Old City Hall This building dates back to the late 19th century. In 1947 it was reconstructed. A mural depicting the local history sits in the foyer and the Juárez Coat of Arms is on the façade of the building. This site was the seat of civil authority for more than 300

Old Mesilla The town is built around an old church and Spanish plaza reminiscent of Santa Fe. This small village features a colorful historical background with many shops and restaurants,

Site of Benito Juárez Monument This is the most important monument within the city. In 1909, President Porfirio Diaz came to Cd. Júarez to place the first stone on this monument. It was finished one year later and inaugurated on Sept. 16, 1910. Calles Vicente Guerrero, Ramon Corona and Constitución, Cd. Juárez.

Site of Benito Juárez’s Office A small bust and plaque commemorate the site where the office of Benito Juárez stood. Stahmann Farms and Country Store Stahmann Farms is the world’s largest family-owned pecan grove. In the shop you can sample and buy chocolates, pecan pie and other pecan confections.
