| | Time for Green Beer and Irish Car Bomb Cupcakes | | By Maribel Santoyo | | Ben Fyffe had already been contemplating cleaning out the garage when he received a Facebook invitation to a “Beer and Cupcakes” event at Hope and Anchor a few months ago.
He thought it was an unlikely pairing but a good enough excuse to get rid of some clutter. And who doesn’t like cupcakes, right? Well, much to Fyffe’s surprise the cupcake that he would later behold in exchange for two dusty household items, was one of the best he had ever had.
“I wish I had brought more things to donate because it was that good,” said Fyffe of his Guinness Beer cupcake (with Bailey’s Irish cream frosting). “The cupcakes are either beer or cocktail inspired.”
Ah. Now that we got your attention, take note: Hope and Anchor is hosting its next “Green Beer and Cupcake” knickknack drive this Saturday from 5 to 7 p.m. (21 and over, sorry kiddos). And in the great spirit of St. Paddy’s day, there will be “Irish car bomb” Cupcakes, and shamrock-colored beer.
The idea behind the “Beer and Cupcake” knickknack drives is to get as many people to donate household items to keep the shelves stocked at Next To Nuevo, the Center Against Family Violence’s (CAFV) enterprise venture/thrift store located at 960 Chelsea St.
They’ll take books, dishes, living room décor, pillows, linens – even that hideous crocheted toilet paper cover (with the doll head) that your grand aunt knitted you for Christmas once. Two items has you covered for admission, and of course, will earn you a cupcake.
“This is the second drive and we think it is going to be a huge success – we’re hoping that the truck is jam packed!” said event organizor Valerie Muñoz. “Some of the donations will be put on the shelves, and some items will go to some of the women who are moving into their own places after staying in the (emergency) shelter.”
The CAFV’s emergency shelter provides residence to 750 individuals a year. In recent years, the El Paso Police Department has seen a 14 percent increase in reports of domestic violence.
“We will take anyone who is a victim of domestic violence, male or female … anyone who is in imminent danger of their safety,” said Cesar Campa, CAFV community relations director. “And all the revenue that the store makes from selling those donations goes back to the services we provide.”
As for the champion cupcakes? Well, they’re first come, first serve. Scoop up your wares and get there before they’re gone, Muñoz said.
“My friend Erica Marin, who is an amazing baker, makes them,” she said. “The frosting is so sweet, makes you thirsty and what better to quench your thirst than an ice cold beer?”
