| | Vienna Boys Choir: Legendary group to perform in El Paso, Las Cruces | | By Amy Arsenault | | The Vienna Boys Choir, a choral group consisting of boys between the ages of 10 and 14, has its roots in royalty and a reputation that garners about half a million spectators each year.
The musical repertory, conceived by Emperor Maximilian I of Austria in 1498, will perform at the Rio Grande Theatre in Las Cruces on Tuesday, and again in El Paso at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, March 24.
In the more than 400 years since the choir’s inception, its members have worked with the elite of the musical arts – even Mozart.
Modern-day Vienna Boys experience a lavish lifestyle accompanied by global travel, celebrity encounters and star treatment. Pastor Lenae Rasmussen of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, is assisting the El Paso Youth Choir in their sponsorship of the Vienna Boys’ local show.
“This group is internationally renowned as the premier children’s choir in the world,” she says. “By bringing them to El Paso, we are giving our students a chance to see the opportunities the world could hold for them. We expect this up-close experience to inspire the members of our choir and really motivate them.”
The Vienna Boys’ performances fund their education, lodging and musical instruction. For about one-third of the year, young boys become global jet-setters, garnering enough experience and recognition to allow for a lifetime in the performing arts. For the El Paso Youth Choir, they provide a glimpse of the big time.
“We hope to one day lead our students through the hard work and dedication it takes to become a touring choir,” Rasmussen says. “The El Paso presence of Vienna Boys, who perform both traditional and popular music, will inspire our students in reaching this goal.”
