| Devil Wears Prada on guitar hero, regrettable band names | | By Shane Weller | |
Chart-topping metal band The Devil Wears Prada will be ripping up the Club 101 stage this Sunday with All That Remains, Story of the Year and Haste the Day. We caught up with lead singer Jeremy Depoyster and talked about some of the new tracks from their latest album, “With Roots Above and Branches Below,” being in Guitar Hero, and what he doesn’t like about their band name.
Q. Your CD comes with a DVD. Tell us a little bit about that.
The DVD is all studio footage about half an hour long, from, like, recording with (producer) Joey (Sturgis), and in Indiana hanging out and the usual shenanigans. It’s an exclusive, so if you go to Best Buy you can get that one or the deluxe one that comes with the DVD.
Q. What is “Assistant to the Regional Manager” about? Where did you get the idea for that song title?
The song is generally about faith and people who have lost faith. The song title is from “The Office.”
Q. You also have a song called Lord Xenu. Is that a shot at Scientologists?
Yup, it is. I guess (pauses) it’s just we try to be respectful to other people, but Scientology is a joke and all of our song titles are a joke, but Lord Xenu also sounded sort of metal.
Q. You guys have hit No. 1 in places like Top Hard Rock Albums and No. 11 on the Billboard 200. Can we be expecting to hear your songs on the radio airwaves anytime soon?
I don’t know. I guess that’s up to the label. We’ve been hopefully trying to get a little radio play, but I’m not sure if that’s going to happen. We’re definitely open to it.
Q. What do you think one of the biggest misconceptions of the band is?
A lot of people don’t take us serious because we have a stupid band name. I don’t know – I think a lot of people are starting to give us a chance. We hope to put out music that is better than the current sceney crap. It’s just a misconception when it comes to the name. It sucks having a name you regret. When we first stated we weren’t expecting anything career wise, and we just kind of went with it, and it just started growing more than we expected. I don’t know – it all came together. We were expecting something different and I wish we would have picked a more cultured name.
Q. In 2008 you guys toured with P.O.S., what was it like having a hip-hop artist on that tour? Were the crowds responsive?
P.O.S. was on a third part of a tour, and he was on Warped Tour. I know a lot of people tend to be ignorant to hip-hop on a tour like that, but people were receptive to it, which was awesome. I haven’t heard his punk band, but I’ve definitely heard about it.
Q. The song “Dez Moines” is available on Guitar Hero World Tour. Do you guys ever play that while on the road? And if so are you ever taken aback by it?
We never play Guitar Hero on the road nowadays. We never have the controllers or anything. We have all had experiences prior to when we got it.
