TEJANOS READY FOR PLAYOFF RUN

It may not have been the way they envisioned it, but the El Paso Community College baseball team clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference last weekend.

The Tejanos advanced to the eight-team double-elimination Region V Baseball Tournament in Lubbock May 11-15.

DIABLOS PROMISE FUN AT THE OLD BALLPARK

The surest sign that summer has arrived in El Paso is the thunderous cry of "Play ball!" at Cohen Stadium.

That cry will be heard for the first time this season on Thursday as the El Paso Diablos open the American Association campaign against the Shreveport Sports at 7:05 p.m.

El Paso opens the seven-game home stand with four games against Shreveport (May 8-11) and three games against new league member, the Wichita Wingnuts (May 13-15), who spent the last 20 years in the Texas League.

The 134th running of the Kentucky Derby should be remembered for Big Brown's perfect ride to victory. Instead, all of the focus has been placed on runner-up Eight Belles, the filly who broke both her front ankles shortly after crossing the finish line and immediately had to be euthanized.

PATRIOTS KICK OFF 2008 SEASON

After fighting the Austin Aztex to a 0-0 tie in their season opener, the El Paso Patriots will try to get their first Premier Developmental League victory on the road as they venture to Louisiana this weekend.
